Compostable Straws for Events and Weddings

A practical guide to ordering commercially compostable sugarcane straws for weddings, bars and catered events.

Compostable straws for events and weddings should be ordered by drink type, not just guest count. A cocktail bar, coffee station and bubble tea cart may each need a different straw. EcoGreen Supplies sells bulk sugarcane-fibre straws that are plastic-free, PFAS-free and certified commercially compostable, with wrapped bubble tea straws available when hygiene and guest handling matter.

Start with the drinks, not the headcount

For a wedding or event, the right straw order depends on the menu and service style. A guest list only tells part of the story. A short cocktail service can use very different stock from an all-day venue with iced coffees, soft drinks and bubble tea.

Work through each service point separately. The bar may need cocktail straws for mixed drinks, regular straws for highballs and soft drinks, and jumbo straws for thick smoothies or frappes. A bubble tea vendor needs the wider straw, and may prefer wrapped stock if guests self-serve.

It is also worth asking whether every drink will be served with a straw. Many venues now provide straws on request for water, beer and wine, while still placing them in cocktails, iced drinks and takeaway cups. That choice can change the order more than the guest count does.

Which straw suits each event drink?

Regular Sugarcane Straws are 6mm x 200mm and suit most standard cold drinks, iced coffees, soft drinks and mixed drinks served in taller cups. They are sold in cases of 2,500 pcs for $70.00 or 5,000 pcs for $135.00. For many catered events, this is the general-purpose straw to keep behind the bar.

Cocktail Sugarcane Straws are 6mm x 140mm and suit short glasses, spirits, cocktails and tasting-style drinks. They are sold in cases of 2,500 pcs for $55.00 or 5,000 pcs for $110.00. If your event has a dedicated cocktail list, the shorter length can look and feel more appropriate than a full-height straw.

Jumbo Sugarcane Straws are 8mm x 200mm and are better for thicker drinks such as smoothies, frappes and some blended mocktails. They are sold in cases of 2,500 pcs for $100.00 or 5,000 pcs for $195.00. They are not a replacement for bubble tea straws, because pearls need the wider 12mm option.

Bubble Tea Straws are 12mm x 220mm and are made for drinks with pearls or inclusions. The unwrapped version is sold in cases of 1,800 pcs for $160.00, while the Individually Wrapped Bubble Tea Straws are 1,800 pcs for $165.00. Event operators usually choose wrapped bubble tea straws when the straws sit on a counter, drinks table or self-serve station.

You can view the core event sizes here: regular sugarcane straws, cocktail sugarcane straws, jumbo sugarcane straws and bubble tea straws.

How many straws should you order for a one-off event?

For a one-off event, count the drinks that are likely to need a straw, then match them to straw types. Do not assume one straw per guest is enough if the event has a bar tab, long service window or multiple drink stations. Also do not order only one straw size if the menu clearly needs more than one.

A practical ordering method is to list the drinks by category. Put cocktails and short serves in one line, standard cold drinks in another, thick blended drinks in another, and bubble tea in its own line. Then choose the closest case quantity that covers those expected serves, with spare stock for dropped straws, bar mistakes and extra rounds.

If your event is attached to a venue, leftover cases are not usually a waste. Regular, cocktail and jumbo straws can move into ordinary café or bar service after the wedding or function. Bubble tea straws are more specialised, so order those closer to the actual bubble tea service plan.

For venues running multiple weddings, race days, markets or catered functions, it may make sense to treat straws as normal consumables rather than event-by-event purchases. Our bulk orders page is the better place to compare case options across the range.

    Wrapped straws and guest handling

Individually wrapped straws are not necessary for every event. If staff place each straw directly into the drink behind the bar, unwrapped straws are usually the simpler option. They are also quicker for bartenders during busy service.

Wrapped straws make more sense when guests handle their own straws. This includes bubble tea stations, drink carts, outdoor counters, grazing tables with cold drinks, and any setup where stock sits in reach for a long period. The wrapping helps keep the straw clean until the guest opens it.

For bubble tea, the wrapped option can also make front-of-house handling neater. Guests can collect a sealed straw with their cup, and staff do not need to manage loose wide straws on a busy bench. EcoGreen Supplies offers individually wrapped bubble tea straws for this use case.

For standard bar service, we do not currently list individually wrapped regular, cocktail or jumbo sugarcane straws. If wrapped presentation is a firm requirement across every drink category, contact [email protected] before ordering so we can confirm the current range rather than guess at availability.

What “compostable” means for an event

EcoGreen sugarcane straws are made from 100% sugarcane fibre, also called bagasse. They are plastic-free, PFAS-free and made without a lining. They are certified commercially compostable and break down in about 90 days in a commercial composting facility.

They are not certified home compostable. That matters for weddings and events, because a backyard compost bin or general waste skip is not the same thing as a commercial composting facility. If composting is part of the event plan, confirm the waste contractor can accept commercially compostable foodservice items before the event.

If the straws end up in general waste, you should not market that as a composting outcome. The honest claim is that the straws are certified commercially compostable where the right collection and processing system is in place. That distinction helps avoid greenwashing on menus, signage and supplier lists.

The straws are designed to hold up for 4+ hours in hot and cold drinks without going soggy. That makes them suitable for normal event service, including drinks that sit on tables or move through trays. They are still single-use service items, so storage and waste planning remain part of the job.

    Delivery planning for event dates

EcoGreen Supplies ships Australia-wide from NSW through the One World Courier network. Standard delivery is three to seven business days, and express delivery is one to three business days. For weddings and ticketed events, order early enough that courier delays do not become a service problem.

Freight is quoted live at checkout using the carrier’s real rates and charged at cost, with no markup. There is no flat shipping rate and no free-shipping threshold. Sugarcane straws are light but bulky, so freight is often driven by carton volume rather than just weight.

Free warehouse pickup is available if that suits your event logistics. This can work well for NSW-based venues, caterers or planners already coordinating bar stock and packaging. If timing is tight, contact [email protected] before placing the order so availability and dispatch timing can be checked.

    A simple ordering checklist

    • Match straw size to drink type before choosing case quantities.
    • Use cocktail straws for short drinks and regular straws for most standard cold drinks.
    • Use jumbo straws for thicker drinks, but use 12mm bubble tea straws for pearls or inclusions.
    • Choose wrapped bubble tea straws when guests self-serve or handle their own straws.
    • Confirm commercial composting collection before making composting claims on event material.
    • Allow for courier time, bulky cartons and a realistic buffer for dropped or extra straws.

For a small event, a full case may be more than the exact number of drinks served. That is normal in commercial purchasing. The better question is whether the remaining stock can be used later by the venue, caterer or mobile bar.

For a large event, ordering too close to the exact forecast can create avoidable pressure at service. Straws are inexpensive compared with a bar running out of basic consumables during peak service. Choose the case mix that keeps each station stocked without relying on staff to move straws around mid-event.

    Common questions

Are compostable straws worth ordering for a wedding if they might go in general waste?

They can still be the right choice if you want a plastic-free, PFAS-free straw, but you should not claim a composting outcome unless the waste is collected for a commercial composting facility. EcoGreen sugarcane straws are certified commercially compostable, not home compostable, so the event waste system matters.

Should I order wrapped or unwrapped straws for an event bar?

For staffed bar service, unwrapped straws are usually faster and simpler because bartenders place them directly into drinks. Wrapped straws are more useful when guests handle the straws themselves, such as at a bubble tea station, drink cart or self-serve table. EcoGreen currently lists individually wrapped bubble tea straws in 12mm x 220mm cases.

How do I work out the right number of straws for a wedding?

Start with the drinks that will actually use a straw, not the guest list alone. Separate cocktails, standard cold drinks, thick blended drinks and bubble tea, then match each group to the correct straw size. Order by case quantity and allow spare stock for dropped straws, remade drinks and extra rounds.

Will sugarcane straws go soggy during a long reception?

EcoGreen sugarcane-fibre straws are designed to hold up for 4+ hours in hot and cold drinks without going soggy. That suits normal wedding and event service, including drinks carried on trays or left on tables. For drinks with pearls or inclusions, use the 12mm bubble tea straw rather than a regular or jumbo straw.

Can I get compostable straws delivered before a fixed event date?

EcoGreen Supplies ships Australia-wide from NSW via the One World Courier network. Standard delivery is three to seven business days, and express delivery is one to three business days. Freight is quoted live at checkout at the carrier’s real rate with no markup, and free warehouse pickup is available.
